Filming a wedding at The Addison Grove

Jake McDonald6 min read

The Addison Grove sits off Fitzhugh Road west of Austin, with a barn, a patio, a live oak grove and a pond all within a short walk of each other. We have filmed full days here and receptions that followed a downtown church ceremony. The property makes it easy to keep everything in one place, and the oaks do a lot of the work for us on camera.

The spaces and the light

There are three outdoor ceremony options we see used: the Pond, the Grove under the live oaks, and the patio. The Barn is the reception room, climate controlled, with wood walls, crystal chandeliers and garage doors that open to the outside.

For a September couple, the planner turned the Pond ceremony 45 degrees so the trees sat in the background. That is the kind of small call that changes how every wide shot looks, and it is worth raising during your walkthrough. The Grove sits under a live oak canopy, and that kind of shade is kind to faces on camera.

Getting ready and first looks

Both suites are on site. The Bluebonnet Suite is the bridal side, a bright house with its own makeup room. The Longhorn Suite is the groom's side. Because everyone is already on the property, the first look, wedding party photos and family photos can all happen before the ceremony without a single car ride.

The venue's standard access window is 10 AM to midnight. On the full days in our timelines, couples added earlier access at 8 or 9 AM so hair and makeup could start on site, while photo and video coverage began around midday or early afternoon. If your beauty team is large, budget for those extra morning hours.

Ask for the venue golf cart to be ready right after the ceremony, because it turns a long walk to the best portrait spots into a two minute ride.

Ceremony, cocktail hour and portraits

Couples here usually tuck away in the bridal suite for 30 to 40 minutes while guests arrive, then walk to the ceremony. One couple's wedding party walked from the back side of the bridal suite down to the Pond. Another lined up in the barn and the bride arrived by golf cart.

Cocktail hour runs on the patio, and the fire pit gets lit at dark. Ask for the golf cart during cocktail hour. We used it to run couples out for sunset portraits and, on two of our days, to visit the longhorns, which live in their own pasture that guests can see from the venue grounds.

Reception, sound and getting home

The Barn holds the dinner, toasts and dancing. On one of our days the band arrived at noon to set up, and that same night had a nine piece band and a mechanical bull going at once. The venue sits outside city limits in Travis County and says there are no venue-imposed noise limits or hard curfews. Events typically end by 11 PM. Our days wrapped between 10 PM and 11:30 PM, and two of them ended with a sparkler send off.

Plan transportation honestly. The venue describes the drive as about 20 minutes from downtown. For an August Saturday, the planner budgeted 50 minutes for shuttles from St. Mary Cathedral to the venue, and the wedding party rode out on a separate, later shuttle after family photos.

Common questions

Is there a rain plan at The Addison Grove?

Yes. The venue has a built-in rain plan and moves ceremonies indoors, and couples can make the final weather call up until the caterer arrives that morning.

How far is The Addison Grove from downtown Austin?

The venue says about 20 minutes. For a Saturday shuttle from St. Mary Cathedral downtown, one planner budgeted 50 minutes.

Can we get ready on site?

Yes. The Bluebonnet Suite and the Longhorn Suite are both on the property, so first looks and formal photos can all happen before the ceremony.

Is there a noise curfew?

The venue says it has no venue-imposed noise restrictions or hard curfews, with events typically ending by 11 PM inside the standard 10 AM to midnight access window.
