Filming a wedding at Canyonwood Ridge

Jake McDonald6 min read

Canyonwood Ridge sits just off Highway 290, about 20 minutes from downtown Austin, and it gives you two ceremony sites on one property: an outdoor Trellis facing the Hill Country and an indoor Chapel built for the same 300 guests. That second option changes how calm the whole day feels. If the weather turns, nobody is flipping a room at the last minute.

The spaces and the light

The Chapel is a tall room with big windows on every side, and the venue describes it as having sunset views. For us that means even light on faces without much fuss. It also has built-in speakers, so the DJ can run ceremony music through the room instead of building a sound system from scratch.

Outside, the Trellis has outlets for DJ speakers. The Reception Hall sits behind large barn doors that stay closed until the reveal, which is worth planning a camera position for. There is also a covered patio the venue suggests for cocktail hour.

Getting ready and first looks

The bridal suite is 800 square feet with its own bathroom and a view over the outdoor ceremony site. There is a separate groom's room. On the November day we filmed, the bride arrived at 9:00 AM when the venue opened and spent the whole morning on site.

That couple did a parent first look at 2:00, their own first look and private vows at 2:15, then portraits and wedding party photos straight through until 3:30. Doing it all before the ceremony meant they walked into cocktail hour ten minutes after the recessional.

Use the Chapel as your rain plan without guilt, and walk it on your tour, since many couples like it enough to make it plan A.

Ceremony, cocktail hour and reception

The ceremony ran from 4:30 to 5:00, and family photos happened right in the ceremony space before anyone scattered. After cocktail hour the couple took a private moment with appetizers and champagne in the bridal suite while guests were seated.

Grand entrance, first dance and both parent dances ran back to back at 6:00. Stacking them like that is good for film: one lighting setup, one burst of energy, and then dinner.

Rain plan

This is the venue's real advantage. The Chapel is a dedicated indoor ceremony room for up to 300, so a rain call does not mean a hotel ballroom look. Some couples choose it as plan A. If the ceremony stays outside, the Chapel works as flex space for cocktail hour or a photo booth.

The venue does not price by season, partly because the indoor Chapel removes most weather risk.
