Filming a wedding at Prospect House

Jake McDonald6 min read

Prospect House is a modern venue on Silver Creek Road in Dripping Springs, about 20 miles from downtown Austin. It is steel, glass and white walls set against open Hill Country, and it photographs clean. The venue runs a lot of the day in house, from planning and florals to the bar, which shows in how smoothly a timeline holds together.

The spaces

The reception hall seats up to 220 with a dance floor. On a September wedding we filmed, cocktail hour used both the patio and The Gallery with two bars open, and guests moved into the Main Hall at 7:20 PM for dinner. The ceremony site outside is a raised platform with a simple frame and open land behind it, which is about as uncluttered a backdrop as you will find.

If weather turns, the venue moves the ceremony indoors, and you can make that call up until your caterer arrives the morning of the wedding.

Getting ready

Venue access started at 9:30 AM with the bride, bridesmaids and a four-chair hair and makeup team all arriving together. The groom's side arrived at 1:00 PM. Photo arrived at 1:45 and we arrived at 2:45, just as the bride was getting into her dress, which is the right moment for video if you are watching hours.

Getting ready suites are on site. The wedding party was tucked into them when guests arrived at 5:00, and the couple went back to the bridal suite for food and a dress change after sunset photos.

Decide on your weather plan by the morning of the wedding, because that is the venue's cutoff for moving the ceremony inside.

First look, ceremony and sunset

The first look was at 3:10, followed by couple portraits and then private vows at 3:30 with no photo or video, which we respect. A first look with the bride's father and brother came next, then wedding party and family photos until about 4:45.

Shuttle vans left two hotels at 4:45 for a 5:00 guest arrival with passed champagne. Strings started at 5:10 and the ceremony at 5:30. The couple joined cocktail hour at 6:30 and went out for sunset photos from 6:50 to 7:10. In September that window is right, and it is short, so plan to go out exactly on time.

Reception and sound

Entrances at 7:30 went straight into the first dance, then a welcome from the parents and plated dinner at 7:45. An espresso martini tower, cake, toasts and parent dances filled the next hour, and the dance floor opened at 9:00 with a saxophone joining at 9:20.

The venue is outside city limits in Travis County and says it has no noise restrictions or hard curfew. Events usually end by 11:00. That night the bar closed at 10:30, the couple left through bubbles at 10:40, and vendors were out by 11:45.
